I’ve said it time and time again: put yourself in the customer’s shoes. What is going to make you choose one business over the dozens of others in your area?
The harsh reality is that your business is being judged before a potential customer ever has the chance to speak with you.
Before they call, they’ve already done their homework. They’ve compared you to your competitors, read your Google reviews, browsed your website, and scrolled through your social media. It doesn’t take long before they’ve decided whether or not your business feels like the right fit.
So, what should you be paying attention to if you want to make a great first impression? Here are five (out of many other) things every business owner should focus on.
1. Your Online Reviews
Your reviews tell a story. They give potential customers a glimpse into the experience they can expect and show whether your business is active, engaged, and consistently providing great service.
Believe it or not, customers aren’t necessarily looking for perfection. In fact, I think a perfect 5.0-star rating can sometimes look a little suspicious (but maybe that’s just me). What people really want to see is what past customers are saying. Are they talking about friendly service, fair pricing, and a great overall experience? Or are they warning others to stay away because of poor communication or a bad experience?
When the same positive themes show up over and over again, it helps potential customers know what they can expect before they ever contact you.
Review recency matters, too. If you have hundreds of reviews but haven’t received a new one in several months, customers may assume your business isn’t as active as it once was.
And don’t forget to respond. Replying to reviews, both positive and negative, shows that you’re paying attention. A simple thank you lets customers know you appreciate their feedback, while a thoughtful response to a negative review shows professionalism and a willingness to make things right.
2. Your Website
Your website is often the first real interaction someone has with your business, so make it count.
Ask yourself a few simple questions. Is all of your information up to date? Is your website mobile-friendly? Is it easy to navigate? Can someone immediately tell what products or services you offer and where you provide them? Does it load quickly? Is there a clear call to action that tells visitors what to do next?
If you answered “no” to any of those questions, it may be time to make some updates—or reach out to a professional who can help.
3. Your Photos
Think about the last time you looked up a local business online. Chances are, you clicked on the photos before making a decision.
What do you want to see? Probably not a gallery full of generic stock images.
People want to see the real faces behind the business. Show off your team, your office, your storefront, your company vehicles, or your latest projects. Even better, share photos of your team volunteering, attending community events, or celebrating company milestones.
Authentic photos help people picture themselves working with you, and they make your business feel more approachable and genuine.
4. How Easy It Is to Contact You
Imagine a potential customer is ready to reach out but they can’t find your phone number, your contact form doesn’t work, or they’re not sure if you’re even open. It only takes a few moments of frustration for someone to leave your website and contact a competitor instead.
Your contact information should be easy to find no matter where someone is looking. Whether they’re on your website, Google Business Profile, or social media pages, customers expect to easily find your phone number, business hours, address, and a simple way to get in touch.
But making it easy to contact you is only half the battle. How you respond matters just as much. Customers notice businesses that reply to Facebook messages, answer questions in the comments, and respond to Google reviews. Even if you can’t respond immediately, acknowledging a customer’s message shows that you’re paying attention and value their time.
5. Whether You Feel Like Someone They Can Trust
By the time a potential customer has looked through your reviews, browsed your website, checked out your photos, and explored your social media, they’ve already formed an overall impression of your business. Even if they can’t explain exactly why, they usually have a gut feeling about whether they want to work with you.
They’re asking themselves questions like:
- Does this business look established?
- Do they seem reliable?
- Do they care about their customers?
- Can I picture myself working with them?
- Do they feel like the right fit for what I need?
The interesting part is that these decisions aren’t usually based on one thing. It’s the combination of everything they’ve seen. Recent reviews, updated photos, a professional website, consistent branding, and responsive communication all work together to create confidence.
In many cases, customers don’t choose the business with the lowest price, they choose the one that makes them feel the most comfortable reaching out. A polished, active online presence helps remove uncertainty and gives people the confidence to take the next step.
